CD recording

What happens if the equalisation of the recording is distorted? Well this is common practice, in studios to 'equalise' recordings to suit the target audience's equipment. In fact U2's album 'Joshua Tree' was 'equalised' on a ghetto blaster in the studio, because they wanted it to sound best on that equipment (teenage audience).

If you buy a 'DDD' classical recording, it is far likelier it was not messed up in the mastering process than if you bought, say, Madonnas latest album.

Unfortunately this may imply that even the best loudspeakers and hifi can make some recordings worse than a ghetto blaster would, and one should consider that ultimately 'listening tests are flawed, if they do not first ensure the recording is un-adulterated.

To eliminate the recording, I use a series of sweeps and tones from computer generated sine waves, burned directly onto the CD, thus eliminating any variation in amplitude for the different frequencies (constant F.R.)

The test is recorded on PC as a wav file, which then may be compared for amplitude of the recorded waves - to the scope plot.

now we can work out how much, if any, the amplitudes were distorted during recording of the instrument. Thus hopefully eliminating the recording process as the culprit.
